Staff Sergeant Charles Daugherty
A Tribute to the Life of Charles Doherty (husband of Betty Doherty, father of Chuck, Lynn, Nancy, Diane & Robert):
Staff Sergeant Charles (Chuck) Doherty was born June 3, 1928 in Buffalo, New York. Shortly after high school, Chuck enlisted in the United States Air Force, following in the footsteps of his uncle, Robert Doherty, and his brother, Robert, who served in WWI and WWII respectively.
Chuck was stationed at Westover Air Base in Massachusetts where he worked alongside the mechanics maintaining aircraft for flying duty. After 3 months Chuck was sent to Japan, leaving behind his wife, Betty, who he married on Feb. 24, 1951. The unit in Japan was responsible for supplying the troops in Korea and evacuating the wounded back to Japan.
When his service in Japan ended, Chuck was reassigned to Eastern Air Defense in Youngstown, Ohio. He had the responsibility of procuring supplies for the 86th Fighter Interceptor Squadron. Chuck was honorably discharged on September 2, 1953.
After returning home, Chuck attended Kent State University on the GI Bill where he earned his B.S. in Business Administration. Chuck went to work with the Federal Credit Union Administration and started a family with Betty. Chuck & Betty had five children; Chuck, Lynn, Nancy, Diane & Robert. Chuck and Betty eventually settled in Oak Forest, IL before retiring to Richard Center, WI in 1989. Chuck and Betty returned to Illinois in 2012, residing in Tinley Park.
Chuck was humbled to take part in the honor flight to Washington DC in 2016 alongside his fellow veterans. Chuck was very proud of his service and his country. Visiting the memorials was a highlight of his life.
Chuck was honored to be a member of the Veteran Voices Military Group at Faith United Methodist Church where he enjoyed the fellowship of the other veterans.
Chuck passed away on October 17, 2018 surrounded by Betty, his wife of 67 years, their children, grandchildren & loved ones. Chuck is interred at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
