A Tribute to the Life of Frank Wertheim (father of Darryl Wertheim)

Frank was born May 8, 1921 on a small farm in Chicago’s Mount Greenwood neighborhood. His parents were recent immigrants of German and Czech descent. He attended Morgan Park High School. He married Sylvia Polansky in September, 1941.

Frank served in World War II in France, Germany and Austria with the 103rd Infantry. 928th Field Artillery Battalion. His duties were Artillery Mechanic, Radio Operator and Heavy Machine Gunner. Campaigns: Battle of the Bulge, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was involved in the liberation of Camp Lager, Sulzbach, Germany P.O.W. Camp. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

After World War II he returned to Chicago and devoted his life to his family, raising 3 children, Darryl, Christine and Scott.

He was a machinist for Continental Can Company, Chicago. In later years he lived in Oak Lawn and Orland Hills.

Frank died on February 7, 1982.
