August F. Hazzard
A Tribute to the Life of August F. Hazzard (grandfather of Cyndi Hazzard):
August F. Hazzard was born on October 21, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois. He was the son of August Edward and Helen. He had 6 sisters and 1 brother.
August illegally enlisted on his 17th birthday (October 21, 1941) for World War II. He was part of an elite artillery group (463rd PFAB) that provided jump and ground support for other units. He jumped with the 82nd "All American" Airborne, participated in the liberation of Southern France and Rome, met the Pope, was part of the "Champagne Campaign", and fought in the historic Battle of the Bulge, defending Bastogne, Belgium, in the freezing cold for a month with the 101st Airborne while surrounded by German troops.
He participated in the liberation of concentration camps and entered Germany and Austria. He IS a HERO!!!
August married Genevieve Steen on Christmas Eve, 1949. Together they had 3 kids: Helen, Robert, and Cynthia, and 6 grandchildren. They lived in Inglewood, Illinois. August was Chief of Police for about 23 years for the Norfolk Railroad.
He passed away on August 6, 1994 and is buried at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
